Pat Metheny - Orchestrion

Pat Metheny

Orchestrion

Orchestrion is an adventurous “solo” recording that pairs the composer-guitarist with a phalanx of remarkable, custom-made instruments played via solenoid switches and pneumatics, resulting in the most original set of his career.

Rob Zombie - Hellbilly Deluxe 2

Rob Zombie

Hellbilly Deluxe 2

2010 release, the long awaited follow up to Rob Zombie’s debut solo album is both a first and a last:

his first album for his new label Roadrunner, and - if you believe anything Rob Zombie says - the last CD he plans to release, claiming digital downloads have destroyed the concept of the CD format.

Lead by the first single, “Sick Bubblegum”, the album picks up where the first Hellbilly Deluxe left off.

Midlake - Courage of Others

Midlake

Courage of Others

The Courage Of Others is their most complete and beautiful body of work yet, best appreciated as a whole in the old-fashioned sense of an album - which makes perfect sense when you know Midlake linchpin Tim Smith’s fondness for the look and feel of past times.

So what’s changed since The Trials of Van Occupanther, their second, hugely loved breakthrough album?

Just as that record was in part inspired by the Soft Rock of the early-to-mid 1970s - from Neil Young and America to Fleetwood Mac - so Midlake’s new album also looks to a slightly earlier, and definitely British, trad-tainted Folk sound.

It may share the same gorgeously analogue-warm electro-acoustic template as Van Occupanther but it’s a slower, darker and more carved record, both eerier and dreamier.

Album Leaf - A Chorus of Storytellers

Album Leaf

A Chorus of Storytellers

2010 release from Alt-Rock favorite Jimmy LaValle (AKA The Album Leaf).

A Chorus Of Storytellers was recorded by Ryan Hadlock in the frosty month of February 2009 at Bear Creek Studio, just outside of Seattle, and it was mixed in the decidedly warmer month of June in Reykjavik, Iceland by Birgir Jon Birgisson (of Sigur Ros).

Those paying attention will notice that this is nearly the same way their last album Into The Blue Again was recorded.

There is, however, one fundamental difference between this and every other album The Album Leaf has ever recorded.

For the first time in five albums, The Album Leaf recorded as a whole band. In the past, almost every instrument was performed by principal songwriter and multi-instrumentalist LaValle. This time the whole band was invited to participate and the result is possibly their best record yet.

Los Campesinos! - Romance Is Boring

Los Campesinos!

Romance Is Boring

If you come to Romance Is Boring with too many preconceptions about Los Campesinos!, please leave them at the door: this album may not be what you expect.

Of course, the signs of a rejuvenated Campesinos! were there, if you were looking.

Last year’s mini album We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed debuted a firmer, harder sound, the giddy sugar rush of “You! Me! Dancing!” metabolized into nervous adrenaline and lyrics spiked with jealousy, angst and paranoia.

But Romance Is Boring feels like a band that’s – well, not so much grown up – let’s say “fully realized.”
