Montrose - Rock The Nation - 2CD
Montrose was put together by guitarist Ronnie Montrose after leaving the Edgar Winter Group in early 1973.
Ronnie Montrose was also a veteran of the session scene having played on albums by Van Morrison and Boz Scaggs as well as the aforementioned Edgar Winter Group. The band's first two albums featured Sammy Hagar on vocals and are still highly regarded to this day managing to mix hard rock with a strong melody and unforgettable riffs.
The band's self-titled debut included many rock classics. The album which was produced by Ted Templeman was released in October 1973 and charted in the lower end of the American album charts.
Over the years however it would prove its worth and go on to sell over a million copies. It was also a hugely influential album with some calling the band America's answer to led Zeppelin
The second album "Paper Money again produced by Ted Templeman would emerge almost to the day a year later and once again charted and sold almost twice as much as the debut.
This two disc set includes two performances one from before the band had a record deal or even a name. At the time of the first session for San Francisco's rock radio station KSAN the band were known as Ronnie Montrose and friends. Much of the material performed at this session was to appear on the band's debut album. The set also includes two covers, Good Rockin' Tonight and Roll Over Beethoven The second disc from this set comes from another session recorded on December 26th 1974 once again recorded at The Record Plant In Sausalito for KSAN.
This time the band are merely recording songs presumably for play out as session tracks for KSAN as there is no audience on the recording which does however manage to capture the good natured banter between the members which is surprising when you think that tensions between Ronnie Montrose and Sammy Hagar would see the line-up split just six weeks later.Regarded as one of the Greatest Rock Bands of All Time this two disc set features Montrose in their prime and the band through Sammy Hagar's inclusion still has a huge fan base.
This album contains two radio performances From Montrose recorded in April 1973 and December 1974 featuring a pre Van Halen Sammy Hagar First concert recorded before the band had been named Montrose Second concert recorded just two months before Sammy Hagar left the band Presented in card gatefold sleeve with in depth liner notes by Broadcaster/Author Jon Kirkman and rarely seen photographs.
