Brazilian music burst upon the world scene in 1959, with the irresistible soundtrack to the film Black Orpheus. The composer was Luiz Bonfa. By 1963, when this album was recorded, the music had acquired the name bossa nova; and was a fully fledged craze. When the craze had passed, a few genuinely talented artists survived, including Jobim, Gilberto and Bonfa.
This beautiful, low-key album catches his style to perfection. His delicate guitar and quiet confidential voice are surrounded with exquisitely judged arrangements by Lalo Schifrin and he is joined on several tracks by the remarkable pianist and guitarist Oscar Castro-Neves. Bonfa produces definitive versions of some of his best-known songs, including Manha de Carnaval, Tristeza and Silencio do Amor in a set which sounds as fresh now as on the day it was first released. --Dave Gelly
